-what's an ebow?
Ever been frustrated with the limitations on the Loop Sets that you can buy?
Sure, the sounds are cool, but many times they don't really fit together, and you are stuck with their very specific pattern and sound (fade in, fade out, echo, distortion, etc). Here's an example using the free samples from the Aural E: Eclectic Electronica loop set sold by Sony Media Software. This is a neat set, and it's easy to make a little song like this:
Example Song 1 (right click and choose "save target as.." to save to your machine)
Cool little tune, but how can we make this more of a "finished" song? Well, we could use more of their sounds to make something like this:
That's closer, but even within their set, the sounds don't quite match up. I wish that the synth sound followed a different pattern, but I have no way of changing it. Although I created the small room studio - ebow loop set for entirely different reasons (as a songwriting tool), this set gives anyone a nice way add to your ambient parts to loop based songs. Here's Example Song 1 with sounds from ebow loop set added:
Or here's another example with a different variation:
The ebow loop set is made up of basic sounds, they are designed to be a starting point to create any pattern. Here's a low quality example of a typical loop from this set without other music (pause at beginning and end not present in real loop set, which has perfect sustain when looped - see Example Song 5):
The ebow loop set is tracked over one (I think ideal) octave on a guitar, and each note is tracked individually to capture the personality of the guitar (this set is not one note with pitch shift applied). Since this set is just the basic sounds, either a very basic understanding of music theory or a bit of patience with trial and error is necessary for use of this set. Or you can do a bit of web surfing to get exact notes in a major or minor scale, I suppose!
Here are more examples using the ebow loop set and a drum loop from the *Siggi Baldursson: Drumsugar - siggi style 15 beat loop set, also sold by Sony Media Software.
